Speaker Series Highlights Career Opportunities in Future Energy Sector

On February 29, Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans, in partnership with Greater New Orleans, Inc., convened a Speaker Series, attracting a diverse audience of industry leaders, government officials, educators, administrators, and representatives from community organizations. This year's focus on Future Energy sparked insightful discussions on economic development, workforce trends, and career opportunities within the energy sector.

The panel, moderated by Salem Habte, Energy Inclusion Associate at GNO, Inc., featured esteemed speakers Sumesh Arora, Ph.D., Program Manager of Diversity & Workforce Strategies at Entergy, and James Martin, CEO of Gulf Wind Technology. Arora and Martin shared valuable insights into the evolving energy landscape and the potential for career growth in the region.

A significant highlight of the discussion was the emphasis on engaging youth in the energy sector from an early age. Martin stressed the importance of reaching out to high school and middle school students, as his company anticipates significant workforce increases by 2030. Both panelists underscored that while some roles in future energies may require advanced degrees, there are ample high-wage jobs with growth opportunities available for individuals with high school diplomas and associate degrees.

Martin emphasized the effectiveness of mentorship programs in developing workers and fostering long-term careers within the industry. He highlighted the importance of investing in employee growth and providing avenues for advancement.

Arora echoed Martin's sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships with local colleges and universities in preparing the workforce for the demands of the energy sector. He underscored the need for collaboration between industry stakeholders and educational institutions to bridge the skills gap and ensure a pipeline of skilled workers for the future. Larry Washington, president of Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans, added that JA offers the bridge between stakeholders that link youth to these opportunities.

The panelists' insights shed light on the diverse array of career pathways available within the energy sector, ranging from technical roles to leadership positions. Their discussion underscored the importance of proactive engagement with youth, investing in employee development, and fostering strong partnerships with educational institutions to drive economic growth and workforce development in the region.

As Greater New Orleans looks towards the future, initiatives like the Speaker Series serve as catalysts for dialogue, collaboration, and innovation, laying the groundwork for a thriving energy sector and a prosperous community.
